Nitazoxanide is FDA approved for treatment of giardiasis in patients ≥12 months age. Nitazoxanide is available in liquid 100mg/5 ml and tablets of 500 mg. It has been shown to be as effective as metronidazole in relieving symptoms in patients with giardiasis. In addition, nitazoxanide may be effective in treating other intestinal parasites (eg, cryptosporidium and amebiasis) and may shorten the duration of diarrhea attributed to infection even when no pathogen is detected.
Side effects include nausea, anorexia, flatulence, increased appetite, enlarged salivary glands, yellow eyes, dysuria, and yellow urine
Doses
- Age 1 to 3 years: 100 mg orally two times per day for 3 days
- Age 4 to 11 years: 200 mg orally two times per day for 3 days
- Age ≥12 years: 500 mg orally two times per day for 3 days
