IMPORTANCE OF URINE PROTEIN CREATININE RATIO

Proteinuria is indicative of significant renal disease.  Spot urine protein creatinine ratio is a useful and reliable screening test. First morning urine specimen is preferred. Urine protein creatinine ratio (Up/Uc) <0.2 g/g is normal (neonates < 0.5 g/g is normal); ratio 0.5 to 1 is mild proteinuria; 1-2 g/g is moderate proteinuria and >2 g/g is severe or nephrotic range proteinuria. Moderate to severe proteinuria cannot be explained by hematuria alone.
