Pediatrician’s Role in Adoption

Do a thorough physical examination including that of genitalia. Development assessment of a child, preferably by a specialist is desirable. Many children coming from orphanages have delayed development due to lack of stimulation. After adoption most of them show remarkable improvement in next few days. Given below is a list of tests from which you can choose or add as per any specific scenario-

  • Hepatitis B – HBsAg , IgM and IgG HBc Ag
  • Hepatitis C  Antibody
  • HIV 1 and 2 serology or PCR during newborn period upto 18 months of age
  • TORCH  Titres & VDRL
  • Mantoux test
  • Urine routine & culture
  • CBC, Malarial parasite antigen  
  • Biochemical tests: LFT , KFT, free T4 &  TSH
  • Hemoglobinopathies and Blood disorders – HPLC
  • Metabolic screening: Blood TMS  
  • Imaging: Chest Xray; USG abdomen & cranium; ECHO
  • Evaluation of hearing & eye examination.
