Guidelines for Umbilical Cord Blood Banking

  • Umbilical cord blood can be safely collected from the placenta without any harm to baby or mother, however cord blood collection is not advisable in complicated deliveries.
  • Private Cord banking is indicated if there is an existing family member (siblings or biological parents only), is currently suffering from diseases which are approved to be benefitted by allogenic stem cell transplantation
  • In view of disadvantages of private cord banking like its quality and storage, availability of required number of units of stem cells and inability for autologous stem cell transplantation, public cord blood banking serves the actual purpose and should only be promoted.
  • Cord blood storage is not indicated for autologous stem cell transplantation.
