Current WHO guidelines on Rabies Vaccine

IAP Advisory Committee on Vaccines & Immunization(ACVIP) endorses the new schedule suggested by WHO in 2018 as below-

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (Pre-EP) is recommended  in the following two situations.

• Children exposed to pets in home.

• Children identified to have a higher risk of being bitten by dogs.

Vaccine schedule recommended by WHO

PRE- Exposure Prophylaxis

“1-site vaccine administration on days 0 and 7 for intramuscular administration”.

POST Exposure prophylaxis

A 4-dose schedule of either of the following-

1-site intramuscular administration of vaccine on Days 0, 3, 7 and between day 14-28 (Total doses=1+1+1+1=4)

2-sites intramuscular administration on days 0 and 1-site on days 7, 21(Total doses=2+1+1=4)

  1. Is 4 dose scheduled medico legally correct when Indian guidelines still recommend 5 dosage

  2. Glad to know …that WHO has identified the need of pre exposure prophylaxis in rabies… I had a paper on this topic published titled as “cost benefit analysis of controlling rabies:prioritizing areas in rural setting of maner: a cross sectional study.
