Tacrolimus

Topical calcineurin inhibitors (Tacrolimus/Pimecrolimus) are complex macrolide compounds and selectively inhibit cytokine transcription in activated T-cells

Tacrolimus is used in chronic extensive atopic dermatitis as steroid sparing agent. Unlike Topical steroids, it does not cause skin atrophy and is useful for facial and eyelid dermatitis.

Tacrolimus 0.1% ointments are safe in children >2years of age.
